Although all the details have yet to be worked out, the Mellen City Council voted earlier in the week to dissolve its police department, which for some time now has consisted of a single officer. The city will move ahead with contracting the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office for community patrols and response. The Sheriff’s Office says it will have an extra deputy ready to cover the area once an agreement has been finalized. The contract with Mellen is the only prioritized contract of its kind that the city is fulfilling.
