Financial Exigency the Next Step for Northland College

On Thursday, Northland College president Chad Dayton announced that the college board of trustees voted to declare financial exigency, which started a chain of events that would provide a final effort to save the school. TheAshlandDailyPress reports the college was able to raise a record $1.5 million, and the board of trustees was inspired by the effort. However, students in attendance were not comforted by the announcement. Financial exigency allows the college to evaluate its programs, staffing and make budget adjustments to preserve the schools long term survival. A group of Northland faculty, students and alumni have put together a group called True Northland, which wants to open the campus to use by the community and has put together a plan to cut costs that could provide a path forward. Despite the declaration of financial exigency and the True Northland plan, many students have begun looking for other schools to attend.
