Ontonagon Seeks New Water Supply for Several Homes in The County

The mystery of where the water that comes from an unregulated spigot near the Bill Nichols Rail-Trail in Ontonagon County orginates has been solved. Earlier in the summer, the state department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy ordered the Department of Natural Resources to disable the spigot, since its source was unknown. Its now been found that the old well head is a half mile from the spigot and is thought to be an underground spring. The DNR has yet to find documentation of the well, which would be crucial to keeping it as a source for the spigot and three homes. For now, the DNR continues to look for a safe water source and the spigot will continue to be available, although now it has a sign advising the public not to use it.
