Motor Vehicle Accidents in the U.P. Are Rising

According to new data from the Michigan State Police Department of Highway Safety Planning, deadly motor vehicle accidents in the U.P. are coming close to those before the pandemic. 6News reports there were a total of 8,571 crashes in the U.P. leading to 34 deaths in 2022, compared to 9,140 crashes leading to 37 deaths in 2019. Marquette and Dickinson counties had the highest number of fatalities last year, with each county seeing 5 fatalities each. Out of all fatal crashes in the state last year, 231 victims were not wearing the seatbelts.
