An emergency application to block the Michigan Parole Board’s decision to release an offender from the Saginaw Correctional Facility has been filed by the state’s attorney general in the case of 70 year old Paul Gaulthier, of Ontonagon, who is serving a 30 year to life sentence. The timing of the filing to release Gaulthier comes as he is just reaching the term of his minimum sentence. Gaulthier was convicted in 2009 for trying to kill his significant other by strangling and smothering her. According to the AG, Gaulthier still minimizes his role in the attack. He also has failed to complete a domestic violence intervention treatment program while in prison, and has two incidents of assault on his record while incarcerated. The AG contends he will always be a threat, particularly to the female population.
