The beach at Sunday Lake has reopened after a blue-green algae bloom prompted health department officials to close access to it on Tuesday. Regular sampling for E. Coli was done when microsystin, a toxin found in some types of algae was found. Summer is the high season for algal blooms that occur when the water surface is warm. The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department says the public should be mindful of algae blooms, avoiding contact with water that has algae in it or water that is not visually clear. The public should also avoid swimming after heavy rains as stormwater runoff can contaminate water.
