Overnight Tuesday night, the city of Wakefield experienced heavy rain for a prolonged period of time. The rain coupled with snowmelt placed serious pressure on the City’s sanitary sewer system. Early Wednesday morning, city staff took action to lessen the possibility of sewer backups into basements. The City asks that all residents with sump pumps to verify they are not connected to their home sanitary sewer. As the ground thaws and spring rains increase, excess outflow from sump pumps can overwhelm the city system. If you are unsure if your sump pump is connected to the sanitary sewer system, call the City and a member of Public Works will be glad to help you. You can also find more info at cityofwakefield.org.
