Bessemer Considering Alternate Funding Options for Some City Services

The Bessemer City Council has been considering implementing a special assessment tax for a few months to help finance police and fire services and free up funds in the general fund. At its meeting earlier in the week, the council tabled any decision until they can gain further information. City Manager Charly Loper said of the communities she’s inquired with, three implemented a millage. One implemented a fee. In her estimation, a millage would be the best option. Loper also said the millage would not be a permanent thing, but rather one the city would have to pass a resolution annually.
