Tribe Gives Town Notice in Access Dispute

The town of Lac du Flambeau has been informed by the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians that it has until January 16 of next year come up with the outstanding monthly road access permit fees. As of August, the town had run out of funds to make the monthly access payments, so the most recent payment 0f $50K was made on behalf of the town by a title company. The town then received a letter from the tribe stating that no payment for September through October had been made, that the October through November payment would be $54,000 and that the tribe had not taken any steps to amend or rescind the current arrangement. The letter stated that the town had until the January date to pay all outstanding fees due and that failure to do so would result in access being suspended again.
