Ironwood Downtown Will Soon Have A Social District

At the last meeting of the Ironwood City Commission, a written plan from the Downtown Ironwood Developement Authority for a social district downtown was voted on and passed. TheDailyGlobe reports the social district will cover most of the downtown area, and will allow licensed establishments to sell alcoholic beverages in special cups which can then be taken into a designated common area for consumption. Community Development director Tom Bergman says the social area will encourage more establishment to pen in the downtown area. The social district will be subject to all local and state laws regarding alcohol sales, and any business particpating will have to pay a fee to register. The social district will go into effect immediately and the Ironwood City Commission can withdraw the designation of the district at any time it threatens the health, safety or welfare of the public or if it becomes a public nuisance.
