The Town of Sanborn, Ashland County To Get Help From Governor

Governor Tony Evers sent a request to the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee, asking for $2.538 million of the $3.613 million lost by the town of Sanborn following a federal court ruling that local taxing bodies, such as a town like Sanborn, cannot tax property that was once sold to non-Native members and then come back into tribal hands. TheAshlandDailyPress reports that ruling cancelled 85% of the tax revenue collected by the town. Ashland, Bayfield, Iron, Vilas and Sawyer counties were all affected in some way by that ruling. Ashland was the hardest hit, as the county was left to make up for the money lost by Sanborn. The one time allocation of funds will be enough to cover what Sanborn lost plus just over $150,000 for what is called a chargeback, money that was collected that shouldn’t have been on properties in the town.
