Pennies May Soon Be A Thing Of The Past, But Not In This Town

Drive through Woodruff and beside beautiful scenery, there’s the Oehmcke State Fish Hatchery and there’s something else, something unusual and very special…the World’s Largest Penny. The penny is not made of copper but of painted cinderblocks and concrete, and has stood as a monument to the efforts of students at Arbor Vitae High School back in 1952 in support of Dr. Kate Newcombs vision for a local hospital. The students set a goal of collecting 1 million pennies to raise the money to build that hospital. The effort gained nationwide attention and Dr. Kate’s vision was built. The penny is now in need of refurbishment and protection from the elements after standing for over seven decades. The president of the Dr. Kate Museum and Historical Society says it’ll take around $30,000 to build a shelter around the penny, and the historical society is determined to preserve the reminder that even a lowly penny, which will soon be a thing of the past, can used to do great things. A video about Woodruff’s penny can be found on YouTube.
