The Michigan DNR warns of increased fatal moose-vehicle collisions in the Upper Peninsula during the fall season. In the last four years, 60 moose have been killed in crashes with vehicles. Drivers should be cautious, especially at night, using high beams in marked crossing areas. Unlike deer, moose react slowly, posing a human fatality risk. Since 1984, 266 moose have been hit (251 fatalities), mainly in the western U.P. The core moose population in Baraga, Iron, Marquette counties hasn’t grown, at around 300-500 animals. If you hit a large animal, turn on flashers, move to the shoulder, call the police, then the DNR’s Report All Poaching hotline for meat salvage.
