The Hurley School District is facing a substantial funding cut this year, to the tune of $200,000. Since 1993, Wisconsin has imposed a revenue limit on school districts. Hurley, one of the 10% of districts that haven’t exceeded this limit via referendums, faces financial challenges despite nearly doubled property values since 2018, which pushed it above the state aid threshold. Superintendent Kevin Genisot has said inflationary pressures and reduced state aid make funding difficult. The school district is implementing cost-cutting measures, such as not replacing retiring teachers and relying on donors for facility upgrades. Despite cuts, Genisot has said he is confident in the school’s financial stability and commitment to quality education.
