For example, the Vilas County Sheriff’s Office, which aims for four officers per shift, could add three retired officers, significantly boosting public safety during the summer population surge. Sheriff Joseph Fath notes that current staffing is based on year-round residents, making part-time officers crucial for managing increased demand and freeing up full-time staff for other tasks like prisoner transports, court services, and evidence technician duties. The bill would be vital for small departments to make key hires and streamline training for new recruits. That bill has passed committee and awaits an Assembly vote.
