Congressman Tiffany Accuses Tribe Of Extortion

U.S. Congressman Tom Tiffany urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to make the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians reimburse the town of Lac du Flambeau for an “illegal shakedown.” This follows a judge’s ruling favoring the town in a lawsuit brought by the DOJ on behalf of the tribe. The lawsuit stemmed from the tribe blocking roads in May 2023, claiming expired easements, which Tiffany called a dangerous situation. The tribe demanded nearly $10 million and received almost $600,000 in monthly fees. Tiffany labeled these payments “extortion” and is now seeking reimbursement for the town’s expenses incurred during the “unlawful standoff.”
