A Bayfield County man took a plea agreement on the 12th for over 50 animal mistreatment charges. Kim Kingsley, 73, faced multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including mistreatment of animals causing death, failing to provide food, and improper shelter. The investigation, prompted by community complaints, found malnourished horses, insufficient pens, and skeletal remains. Kingsley pleaded no contest to three charges of mistreatment causing death and two charges related to intentionally not feeding animals and failing to provide proper ventilation in shelters. Other charges were dismissed but considered and entered into the record. He received a deferred judgment, 30 days in jail with work release, and one year of probation. He cannot own animals without DOC approval, must complete a mental health assessment, and undergo counseling. His attorney, Kenneth Ryder, stated that Kingsley has raised horses for over 50 years, considering them range animals, not pets. Ryder also noted Kingsley faced harassment, trespassing, and drone surveillance. Ryder emphasized Kingsley needed help, despite accepting responsibility. A restitution hearing is set for today-Friday, and a review hearing for deferred charges in August 2026.
