Living in An Historic Building Closer Than You Think

If you’ve ever dreamed of living in a lighthouse, this may be your chance. The Keweenaw Waterway Upper Entrance Light is no longer needed by the U.S. Coast Guard, according to a notice from the U.S. General Services Administration. The 110 foot tall lighthouse, built in 1920, continues to be an active navigational aid, guiding ships into the Portage Canal and is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The lighthouse is available for park, recreational, educational, cultural or historic preservation purposes. Eligible entities – government agencies, nonprofits, and educational and community organizations – can apply for ownership transfer.
