Environmentalists Take Issue With Oil Company Over Sacred Site

An environmental coalition alleges Enbridge paved over a sacred Michigan Indigenous site for its proposed Line 5 tunnel, a claim Enbridge denies. Oil and Water Don’t Mix, opposing the project, states the Emmet County site was historically important and slated for archaeological surveys. The coalition’s Sean McBrearty claims Enbridge improperly concealed the site by transferring ownership to Emmet County to create a parking lot. Enbridge refutes any connection between the 2022 land swap with Emmet County and the tunnel project, citing improved land access and denying the site’s sacredness or its use for tunnel construction.
