Wisconsin health officials have confirmed recent cases of Powassan virus in the state, a rare but potentially deadly tick-borne illness transmitted by blacklegged ticks. These ticks, also carriers of Lyme disease, can rapidly spread the virus to the brain, causing viral encephalitis. However, unlike Lyme disease, Powassan virus has no cure and can lead to fatal outcomes or long-term neurological damage. Dr. James Thatcher, a physician at the Aspirus Tick-Borne Illness Center, said the symptoms can be severe.
