A ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the first phase of the restoration of the Copper Peak Ski Jump was held recently in Ironwood. Copper Peak board members, legislators, community and regional leaders and volunteers all stood as Copper Peak Board of Directors president Bob Jacquart thanks everyone for attending and helping to bring the dream of a revived Copper Peak to life. He also thanked state and federal legislators for helping to secure $20 million in state funding for the restoration. As the first phase of the project begins, contractors will finish the landing and update the tower, which will allow ski jumpers from all over the world to use the facility to practice. Travis Davidsavor, vice president of Barr Engineering of Duluth, Minnesota said they will work on the jump until the snow comes, and hopes to have the landing finished by end of the year. More funding is needed to complete the renovation, and when that is done, the plan is to have Copper Peak host international competitions and serve as one of the premiere off season training facilities in the world.
