Work will soon begin on replacing the city of Ashland’s water intake pipe. TheDailyPress reports the new line will replace existing pipe constructed in 1881. That pipe serves as the city’s main water supply. Construction equipment and supplies are being brought in and staged, waiting to be installed. The current pipe is cast iron and extends roughly 4000 feet into Lake Superior. The pipe was repaired after it was damaged in the 20’s and continues to serve the community with only occasional disruptions, which is amazing for a water main thats well over 140 years old. The new pipe will be installed by dredging roughly six feet under the lake bed of Lake Superior.
