New Governing Body for Annual County Event Holds First Meeting

After a 5-2 vote by the Gogebic County Commission last month, the Friends of the Gogebic County Fair have taken over management of fair and the fairgrounds. The group meet on the 9th, its first meeting since agreeing to take over. TheDailyGlobe reports those who attended the meeting were give a timeline of the meetings that led to the takeover and plans for this year’s fair were discussed as well as goals for next year regarding construction plans and community involvement. The Board of Directors for the Friends of the Fair consists of chairman Jim Gribble, along with vice chair Red Richards, secretary Lori Bennetts and member Keith Tippett. There will be a booth selling food as a fundraiser for the fair at Festival Ironwood in July. The board talked about repairs to the cattle barn, which are hoped to be complete before the event and discussed a lead on a small scale carnival for the younger kids for this years event. A 3-on-3 basketball tournament, volleyball and horse shoe tournaments were discussed as possibilities for this year’s fair which is set for August 7-10th.
