Starting Tuesday, the 2nd, Michigan’s updated laws regarding adolescent passengers will take affect. The two bill package passed the legislature in 2023 that aligned Michigan law with current recommendations from pediatricians for young passenger safety. The law require children under 2 to be in rear-facing car seats, children under 5 to be in forward-facing seats, and children under 8 or shorter than 4 feet 9 inches to use a booster seat. The other change is that any child under the age of 13, regardless of size will be required to sit in the back seat of a vehicle if a back seat is present.
