The Wakefield News/Bessemer Pick & Axe newspaper published it its last edition this past Friday. According to an interview with TheDailyGlobe, editor and publisher Andy Hill said it is no longer financially viable to run the newspaper that he and his wife purchased almost 2 decades ago. Declining ad sales, sagging circulation and rising costs of operations were just a few of the reasons they’re shutting down. In the early days of owning the business, 80% of office’s revenue came from the paper and 20% from running a print shop from the same building. Now, the print shop brings in most of the business and event that is slowing, with only two print jobs a month being done. Hill started as a sports writer for TheDailyGlobe in 1975. Hill said in all the years he owned the paper never considered selling it, and he hopes that people will remember him for his honest heart and perhaps for his ability to spin a good yarn.
