The attorney for Nathan Monkelien, owner of the Stagecoach Bar and Grille in Ashland, accused of the shooting deaths of two men a year ago appeared before the court to contend that Monkelien’s right to a speedy trial is being violated and that he is being unlawfully held in custody. Attorney Jeremiah Meyer-O’Day said Monkelien is facing grave hardship and irreparable harm while he awaits trial in the Ashland County Jail. TheDailyPress reports Iron County Circuit Court Judge Anthony Stella dismissed the argument, saying the appellate court already ruled on the issue and the only appropriate remedy would be to appeal to the supreme court. Monkelien’s trial, which was originally scheduled to begin in July is now slated for sometime in January.
