A new scenic overlook is now open atop a Cold War-era radar tower at the former Calumet Air Force Station. The tower on Mount Horace Greeley at the abandoned base has been opened by the Open Skies Project, a group that’s working to restore the site. The new 28-foot overlook provides views of Mount Bohemia, Brockway Mountain and Lake Superior, from about 1,572 feet above sea level. It‘s the last stop on Open Skies’ public tours, which also include seeing the nuclear fallout shelter. Visit Keweenaw provided a grant that helped fund the project and says the view is one of the most breathtaking outlooks in the Midwest. More information on the overlook can be found at openskiesproject.org.
