City in Vilas County Receives Special Designation

Downtown Eagle River has received some special recognition…the Historic District has been placed on the State Register of Historic Place. Eagle River started out as a lumber town but then transitioned to accommodating summer tourists who sought out the area. The district is centered along South Railroad Street and East Wall Street, which was established in the late 1880s. Fires and two shopping centers on the outskirts of town have changed the complexion of the city but the downtown district persevered. The 70’s brought re-invention of the downtown, reinvigorating the area’s appeal by taking on a city wide Northwoods Rustic look. The placement on the register designates the downtown area as significant to the states history.
