Wisconsin Public Service Commission Says Water Rates in Ashland Must Increase

Ashland residents may soon see a surprisingly large increase in their water bills. TheDailyPress reports last year the city requested a rate increase of 39% over a two year period. The Wisconsin Public Service Commission responded, saying that the increase needs to be around 52%. The city countered with a 44.4% increase. Public Works Director John Butler and other city staff feel that almost 52% is not sensitive to the goals of the department and resources of the community. Water rates in Ashland haven’t been raised for the past 8 years. The city is looking at a 30 year loan to finance replacement of the city water supply main, and a 44.4% increase should be enough to cover the repayment of the loan. The PSC contends that the higher rate hike would replenish cash on hand in case of unexpected expenses. Residents are invited to voice their opinion at apps.psc.wi.gov or by stopping by City Hall where a computer and help is available to file their comments.
