Water Mains in NW Part of Ironwood to Be Replaced Soon

The city of Ironwood has received a grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy. Water and Sewer Department Supervisor Bob Tervonen said the $11 million grant will allow the replacement of almost three miles of, in many cases, 100 year old, lead water lines in the northwest part of the city. The grant is part of $28 million in state rants awarded to communities in Michigan. City Manager Paul Anderson said the city is also looking for grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Department to replace the sewer system. The first phase of the water main replacement which will start in June, includes Frederick and Albany Streets, Lake Avenue as well as Lawrence and Nightingale Streets.
