The Carden International Circus was in Ashland on Monday night, and while aerial acrobats, jugglers and motorcycle daredevils performed inside the Bay Area Civic Center, two local women were outside protesting the circus and its treatment of the animals in the show, in particular, the elephant. TheAshlandDailyPress reports that PETA says Carden has repeatedly violated minimum standards of the Animal Welfare Act. Jill Reinke and Nancy Kline stood outside the Civic Center and held up signs in protest. Reinke said the animals in the circus are confined, unnatural living conditions and are subjected to coercive training practices. According to PETA, at least two of the elephants in the circus have tested positive for tuberculosis. Reinke and Kline said they’re not against the circus, just the conditions the animals must live in.
