Peregrine Power Couple Returns to Ashland

A couple of Ashland’s seasonal residents have returned to the area early. According to TheDailyPress, a pair of peregrine falcons thought to be a female named Penny and her male partner who raised chicks at the Xcel power plant last season have been seen, almost a month earlier than usual. Their nesting box had to be moved to the side of the building that faces the lake, which unfortunately means the public won’t be able to see the pair’s next this season. The plan is to let the couple settle into their new surroundings, and get a camera set up in time for next season. Last year, students from Ashland Elementary chose names for the four chicks raised by Penny and her mate. This year, students from Bayfield Elementary will come up with a list of possible names. While the happy couple settles in, those interested can go to birdcam.xcelenergy.com to view more the avian residents around the plant.
