The city of Ashland is preparing to remove a faulty elevator shaft from a building it owns on Main Street in order to make the building ready for a prospective developer. TheAshlandDailyPress reports the cost of removing the elevator shaft is going to run around $75,000. If the shaft isn’t removed, it could cause the back wall of the building to collapse. The city was aware that repairs would be needed when it was purchased in 2022. Despite some reticence from some members of the council, it voted to move forward with the repairs and allocate the funds for the repairs from American Rescue Plan Act money.
