An Ontonagon Man Resting Safely at Home After a Close Call

Paul Boehm said he was leaving his ice shack near Merriweather in Bergland Township, when he fell through the ice but was able to kick himself out and crawl on his stomach for a bit, but then broke through again and couldn’t get himself out. Sue Barrette, who owns a home on the lakefront heard Boehm yelling for help and called emergency dispatch. A conservation office and a Michigan trooper waded out and threw Boehm an ice rescue bag, but he couldn’t pull himself out of the water. Rescuers from the Bergland Volunteer Fire Department rowed a boat from shore and secured Boehm to the boat. With the help of a Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife commission, the fire fighters broke the ice and pulled the boat to shore. Lake Gogebic Fire Department and deputies from the Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with the incident. Boehm was taken by ambulance to Aspirus Ironwood where he was checked out and sent home.”
