A student at Michigan Tech in Houghton has captured a rare shot with his trail camera…a cougar striking and taking down a deer, and that footage has scientists and enthusiasts aross the country watching. When Eli Schaefer isn’t studying geospatial engineering he spends time hunting south of campus. When Schaefer posted the video to his Facebook page at the beginning of the month, folks went nuts. Schaefer says he’s had contact with other people studying cougars, and apparently catching the big cat taking down prey is rare. The Department of Natural Resources has been in touch to confirm the sighting. The DNR has confirmed 52 sightings in the state since 2008 and five in Houghton County, three happening in 2011.
