Bayfield Area Outdoorsman Under State and Federal Scrutiny

An investigation is underway after a Bayfield-area man reported he had shot and killed a collared wolf. TheDailyPress reports Pat Quaintance, a former DNR game warden and well known outdoorsman reported he’d shot the wolf this past December. He said the animal had been hanging around his yard and appeared at his back door. Bayfield County Sheriff’s deputies took possession of the animal and the cast was turned over to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Department of Natural Resources. Wolves are protected as endangered and it is illegal to interfere with them unless they threaten a human life. Quaintance is known to advocate for wolf control, going so far as to say the wolf population should be limited in the wild. He has also be cited twice for violating conservation laws.
