Lac du Flambeau and Bad River Tribes Cut Out of Gaming Revenue

A vote last week that would have given $1 million in Tribal Gaming Revenue funds each to the Lac du Flambeau and Bad River bands was postponed to give state legislators time to send letters to leaders of both tribes. Nine other federally recognized tribes in Wisconsin received the same payments. According to WXPR, Lac du Flambeau tribal President John Johnson Sr. stated in a letter to the co chairs of the Joint Finance Committee essentially stating that the denial of the tribe’s share of revenue was punitive, due to an ongoing lawsuit. State Senator Mary Felkowski, who is on the joint finance committee, and who district the Lac du Flambeau reservation is in, sent a letter in response to Johnson, saying that she can’t proclaim either side of the conflict as right or wrong but wants to reset the relationship.
