Tree Disease Found in Most of Southern U.S. Found in U.P.

A disease that is deadly to oak trees has been found in Ashland. TheAshlandDailyPress reports Wilt has been found in samples from a red oak tree from Gordon, which extends from Clam Lake to just north of Glidden and north to Cayuga. Department of Natural Resources forest health specialist Paul Cigan said the risk of oak wilt spreading is alway a possibility. Oak wilt is found in the southern two thirds of the state and is moving north, however for the most part Wisconsin has remained free of the deadly disease. When buying firewood, keep it local and leave oak firewood and uncut logs where they were cut for at least a year. If you suspect oak wilt, contact the University of Wisconsin’s Plant Disease Diagnostic Clinic and submit a sample.
