A recent meeting of the Lac du Flambeau town board heard questions from residents regarding the ongoing issue of expired easements and moneys owed to the Lac du Flambeau Indian tribe. The town has been making monthly payments to keep the four roads in question open. According to TheLakelandTimes, the only thing the town knows is that the tribe is working on a permitting process. Payments to the tribe continue to escalate, with October’s payment of $30K due on the 12th. Residents asked how long the payments would continue, and was there room in the budget for that expenditure. Another resident asked what might happen if the barricades go back up and the town were to cease to make payments. Resident Sally Fermanich responded that she didn’t think negotiations would be peaceful any longer if that happened.
