Ontonagon and the Ontonagon County Road Commission are just a few of the communities in the U.P. to benefit from the Protecting Michigan Pension Grant Program, created to help underfunded retirement plans for state municipalities and their road commissions. TheMiningGazette reports the Village of Ontonagon received just over $1.9 million, which will go towards Municipal Employees Retirement System payments. That funding will help with the almost $6 million pension obligation from the sale of the hospital to Aspirus in 2007. The Ontonagon Road Commission received just under $3 million. The Village of Ontonagon will be eligible for a third round of funding through the program, which will be awarded later this year.
