The Ashland School District continues it’s fight against student vaping. The district joined a class action suit against the makers of the JUUL e-cigarette. The company’s marketing strategies target the youth market. TheAshlandDailyPress reports that Superintendent Robert Prater reported to the school board earlier in the week that the district had received a settlement of $10,00o, much less than the district hope for. The district has already installed vape detectors, which alert staff to the use of an e-cigarette. Board member Shelly Viater says detection is not enough, that the district must focus on education and prevention. Students counter with the distressing admission that quitting once hooked is harder than they thought. Viater suggested that the next step may be to bring in professional help from existing public health resources.
