At the end of the week last week, more than 2 inches of rain in about a half hour fell in Bessemer and the area near Galena and State Street was underwater. Residents say that whenever there’s a heavy rain, many experience flooded yards, some of the water collecting right up to their houses. According to 6News, the Department of Public Works has improved some of the storm drains in the city, particularly those on State Street at a cost of $164,000, and the city says there’s one more leg of the system that could be replaced. Public Works Leadman Ben Tucker says the leg that travels north to the highway then turns west and crosses US2 still needs replaced, and that right now the city is working on locating the funding for that project, which could be as much as $500,000.
