Results of 5 County Survey On Mental Health Show A Healthier Attitude

The results of a survey of almost 900 Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton, Keweenaw and Ontonagon county residents asking questions regarding mental health and substance use issues was discussed during a public meeting on mental health and wellness at the Portage Lake District Library this past Wednesday. TheMiningGazette reports around 95% of respondents said they felt that seeing a therapist was a good thing, signaling a reduction in the stigma surrounding asking for help with mental health, and that those who overuse drugs and alcohol had a chronic illness and needed help and support. The data is still being analyzed by a coaltion of local agencies called Building A Resilient Copper Country, but overall those agencies think the responses were useful and show a positive change in attitude regarding mental health.
