Fundraiser Held for Tribal Elders Held Last Week

Fundraiser Held for Tribal Elders…

At the end of the week, a fundraiser for elders of the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians was held in Watersmeet. Community members purchased bag lunches, the proceeds from which will benefit the elders trip program. WLUC reports the tribe’s goal is to support efforts to share knowledge of the elders about their traditions and cultural practices. The Lac Vieux Desert Elders program supports efforts to preserve the tribe’s culture and language. There are 93 elders in the tribe right now, and elders from the tribe belong to the Michigan Indians Elder’s Association, created to connect the 12 tribes from across the state. Elders meet to discuss issues important to the tribes, help raise money for student scholarships and to keep alive their traditions by sharing with each other.
