Snowmobile Fatalities Up, Increased Boondocking Could Close Many Trails in U.P.

Snowmobile related fatalities and off roading or boondocking may soon be the cause of landowner’s retracting permission for snowmobilers to ride on trails across their property. The LakelandTimes reports that although there are speed limits imposed on riders in some areas. for the most part its the honor system for riders. Snowmobile club volunteers put in countless hours maintaining trails, and riders who insist on going off trail and trespassing may soon make all that hard work for naught. Inexperienced riders, riders who ignore trail rules and riders who ride intoxicated are adding to the growing number of deadly accidents during the season. Just last weekend, there were four deaths in Oneida and Vilas Counties, as well as a number of accidents. Riders are reminded to be mindful and always obey trail signs and riding rules.
