“Lac du Flambeau Tribe Blocks Access to Tribal Lands, Wants Compensation for use of Right of Way…”
Expired right of way agreements are at the center of the presence of barriers across four roads that block access to dozens of homes of non-tribal members on Lac du Flambeau Chippewa reservation land. As reported by WXPR, the barriers were put last week after negotiations between the tribe, two title companies, the town of Lac du Flambeau and the Bureau of Indian Affairs failed. The town board asked the tribe for a 60 day grace period allowing access until an agreement could be reached. The tribal government responded saying they would not remove the barriers until a good faith offer for compensation for over 10 years of trespass is made. Governor Evers visited over the weekend and met with the Tribal Council, Tribal Land Management Director, Administrator and the Tribal legal counsel, and after said although the dispute is a private matter, he hopes all parties can reach an agreement.
