Aspirus U.P. Hospitals Growing Their Own Food…
Good nutrition is one of the keystones to good health and Aspirus Hospitals in Ironwood, Iron River, Ontonagon, and Keweenaw are the latest to start a hydroponic gardening systems to grow their own fruits and vegetables. The gardens will be multi use, they’ll provide for the hospital cafeterias, provide educational opportunities for school groups and eventually provide fresh food for the Aspirus Prescription for Health program. So far salad greens are being grown and Moriah Maggio, patient experience coordinator for the U.P. region and co-chair of Keweenaw Hospital’s green team says the direct health benefits of growing food right in the hospital has been great, the sustainability aspect has also been invaluable. She says the garden program will soon be expanding to Aspirus hospitals in Northern Wisconsin.
