Unemployment Rate in the U.P. Up

The unemployment rate in the U.P. rose to 4.9% in November, up from 4.3% in October and 4.2% a year ago. The data, released by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget said season increases were part of the numbers, but the uptick was not unexpected. Iron County’s November unemployment rate of 5% was also unchanged from October, and up from 4.2% a year ago. The county’s civilian labor force totaled an estimated 4,782 in November, with 241 unemployed. A year ago, Iron County’s labor forced was pegged at 4,725, with 200 out of work. Other counties unemployment in the area, Gogebic at 4.5% and Ontonagon at 6.9%.
