A well at a roadside access point near the former Lake Mine in Greenland Township in Ontonagon county has been ordered closed. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy issued an order to the Michigan Department of Natural Resoures to shut down the water source this past December. The old well is still being used by those hiking along trails in the area. The EGLE stated in the order that the source of the water is unknown and unregulated, and could pose a health or safety risk to the public. The DNR needs to stop the use of water from the area by February 6th, and to permanently abandon the well and water system by plugging the existing well and/or plugging and discontinuing use of the existing water supply piping infrastructure by no later than June 30.
