Couple Wanting to Start Poultry Processing Facility Move Forward

After their offer to purchase and convert a veterinary clinic building into a poultry processing facility was rejected, the owners of Birds’N’Things Farm say they still intend to expand their business. The DailyPress reports that Rusty Defoe and Daisy Perez-Defoe says they have secured around $150,000 in grants and can put an additional $25,000 toward the facility. The nearest slaughter and processing facility is in Ridgeland, a six hour round trip from the DeFoe farm in Red Cliff. The DeFoes say making processing available on their farm would be a boon to local poultry farmers. Despite the change in plans and some negative opinions from the public, the DeFoes says they plan to move forward.
